Dear friends,

It has taken many months of work, but the TransFaith Network is begun. You can help it to grow by joining in the conversation!

When I re-launched TransFaith Online two years ago (fall 2007), it began a wonderful journey on which I have had the privilege of meeting many, many transgender people of faith, as well as our family members, friends and allies. Because we are so divided by both geography and faith tradition, I quickly realized that a more interactive space would be useful in helping people to connect with each other -- instead of just with me.

I also want to offer a huge thank you to the Carpenter Foundation and the AHS Foundation for their commitment to empowering transgender people of faith.

TransFaith Online announces new spirituality track and Interfaith Trans-Clergy Roundtable to be held at Philadelphia TransHealth Conference (June 11-13, 2009; www.transfaithonline.org/transhealth/).

Transgender-identified religious and spiritual leaders are invited to an interfaith luncheon roundtable to share concerns, learn from one another, and strategize for the future. The Interfaith TransClergy Roundtable will be facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Julie Nemecek and the Rev. Jayden Sampson, Esq. on the PTHC Providers Day (Thursday, June 11, 2009). Clergy, seminarians, ministers, and other transgender-identified spiritual leaders are encouraged to attend. There is no cost for the luncheon, but pre-registration is required (www.transfaithonline.org/transhealth/register/).

The PTHC spirituality track will also include clergy training opportunities, community workshops, and trans-friendly religious observances. We are seeking workshop proposals for the spirituality track, as well as for all PTHC workshop tracks. Deadline for workshop proposals is February 15, 2009. If you have a workshop idea; if you are willing to serve on a panel discussion; or if you would just like to help make this event happen, please be in touch with Chris Paige at chris@transfaithonline.org or 215-840-2858.

***********************************************************

TRANSFAITH ON-LINE (www.transfaithonline.org) is dedicated to supporting transgender folks in our faith journeys, while providing useful resources to help people of faith become better educated trans-allies.

TransFaith makes New Year's Resolution

2008 was our first full year of active ministry -- and what a year it was!

    Friends,

I re-launched TransFaith Online in October 2007. So 2008 was our first full year of active ministry -- and what a year it was! Will you help me build on this foundation by supporting TransFaith Online financially?

In 2008, we more than quadrupled our readership averaging well over 2000 unique visitors per month. The home page has been reorganized so that we can better highlight original content and timely topics. The year also brought more than 20 fresh news items and we indexed more than 100 additional articles and other resources, reflecting on everything from transgender theology to extraordinary ordinations and personal testimonies. We made appearances at national conferences and workshops, expanding our networks of relationships, reaching out to both the transgender community and our allies in religious life.

A ground-breaking new InterSections area of the website was launched, compiling basic transgender health information that is not easily accessible in any other place on the internet. Initial InterSections include topics ranging from Prostate Cancer, Smoking, and Suicide to Intersex Identity and Finding a Spiritual Home. Special thanks go out to Christian Lesbians Out Together, who sponsored our 2008 Breast Cancer Awareness effort.

The research for these InterSections has been terribly sobering, as we have realized just how little transgender-specific information on health and wholeness is readily available, beyond basic issues of gender transition. In the coming year, watch for InterSections on TransKids, Osteoporosis, Cardio-Vascular Disease, Safer Sex, and more. We've just launched January's Cervical Cancer Awareness InterSection -- and as you move through your New Year's Resolutions, check out our new Healthy Weight InterSection.

www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/cancer/cervical/

www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/weight/

Spirit has been providing ample inspiration for our next steps as we came late into the planning of the Many Stories, One Voice Conference in New Orleans with an idea for a transgender focused pre-event called "For Such a Time as This." Kudos to NGLTF and the Institute for Welcoming Resources for their willingness to be flexible in integrating that late programming addition. Hurricane Gustav did not cooperate with our plans, but the relationships and energy built in the 3 months of organizing the impromptu effort point to a real hunger for more opportunities to gather for in-person networking and sharing.

Not to be deterred, many of our 22 "For Such a Time as This" presenters agreed to attempt the planned conversations via tele-conference. In addition to audio being added directly at TransFaith Online, these interviews are also being compiled for distribution via YouTube and Vimeo to reach a broader audience. We are especially grateful to the Church Within a Church movement and the United Church of Christ for sponsoring both the New Orleans effort and the recast tele-conference. Our most recently debuted episode highlights comments from Allyson Robinson, the first transgender staff member at the Human Rights Campaign, speaking about Washington politics, transgender organizing, and the role of faith communities in political advocacy.

www.transfaithonline.org/fstat/allyson/

Inspired by such a positive response to For Such a Time as This, we have been talking with the Philadelphia TransHealth Conference about incorporating a full spirituality track, including clergy training opportunities in 2009. Lancaster Theological Seminary is also partnering with us to provide CEU credit for clergy attending Providers Day trainings. The framework is in place and we are eagerly in conversation to finalize speakers and programming for the spirituality track. Please mark your calendars for June 11-13, 2009, and plan to join us in Philadelphia. Don't forget to tell pastors and clergy colleagues about this historic opportunity to experience the diversity of the transgender community.

www.transfaithonline.org/transhealth/

As we look to 2009, watch for more ways for people to get involved with TransFaith. We hope to work more closely with denominational representatives, develop a speakers bureau, and launch an online forum, as well as hosting the Philadelphia TransHealth Conference (did you write down June 11-13, 2009 yet?!). In that growing spirit of collaboration, I am also looking for 100 new donors who will become our founding grassroots base of support.

We have been blessed by some start-up funding from a generous private donor, as well as the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Without their support, this amazing year of ground-breaking accomplishments and transformative relationships would not have been possible.

However, to sustain this ministry for the future, we need your support. Your encouragement and feedback helps us know when we are on the right track -- and your financial contributions make resources available to move forward boldly as opportunities arise.

Personal contributions to the Interfaith Working Group (a 501c3 not-for-profit) in support of TransFaith Online are able to be made conveniently online. We are also able to accept checks, recurring pledges, and vehicle donations. Please visit about.iwgonline.org/support for details.

We are also eager to discuss sponsorship opportunities for churches, advocacy organizations, and other allies who value this work. Please make a resolution to advocate for your church or organization to add TransFaith Online to your mission or advertising budget in 2009.

Through 2008, I have spoken to many, many people -- from transgender seminarians to allied pastors to all kinds of faithful advocates working in the trenches. Something is happening as we gather strength from one another. Something powerful and amazing is afoot as we hear each others stories of struggle and of success, as we break bread and share resources. With your help, we look forward to building on this foundation. Your contributions will enhance technology on the website, covering travel expenses, and making time available to make important connections in the community.

In 2009, I am resolving to find 100 new donors -- individuals giving $500 or $5 (or anywhere in between!) to affirm the important work of this ministry. As we dive into a 2009 that is sure to be more profound than the year we have just completed, please make your own resolution to support this effort to connect our community. I look forward to hearing from you!

Anticipating a spirit-filled new year,

Chris Paige
Publisher
TransFaith Online

***********************************************************

TRANSFAITH ON-LINE (http://www.transfaithonline.org/) is dedicated to supporting transgender folks in our faith journeys, while providing useful resources to help people of faith become better educated trans-allies.

Some of their writings are already found in the TransFaith Jewish index, but we are delighted that they are now taking their efforts to this even more public level.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20, 2008) is set aside to remember those lost to...

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20, 2008) is set aside to remember those lost to anti-transgender violence in the last year. Much of this violence is fueled by a sentiment that it is tacitly and explicitly reinforced by narrow understandings of gender, as well as outright transphobia and homophobia expressed in the name of a Christian God. Too many of us have not only heard "God condemns you" -- but also "It would be better if you were dead."

It is a profound and important step for every faith community to join in a resounding chorus that condemns all forms of violence against people who are differently gendered.

By vocally condemning anti-trans bullying, harassment, and hate crimes, we begin to chip away at the self-righteous fuel that feeds those who believe they are doing God's will by punishing the differently gendered.

By loudly proclaiming that people of all genders are beloved, we begin to address the rampant rate of depression and suicide among transgender youth and adults that so to often encouraged by religious judgment.

By reaching out in love to the transgender community, we begin to undermine the isolation and low self-esteem that can undergird substance abuse and high-risk behaviors (which inform high rates of HIV and AIDS).

Beyond the hate and judgment, trans people's lives are at risk because we so often struggle to meet our most fundamental needs such as safe employment and basic health care. Faith communities need to be out in front of such justice issues as well.

So, this year, let us (re)commit ourselves to the work of speaking up and speaking out, to the work of educating ourselves and educating others, to the work of reaching out in love.

Hello friends, This week is National Suicide Prevention Week, with World Suicide Prevention Day...

Hello friends,

This week is National Suicide Prevention Week, with World Suicide Prevention Day landing on September 10. In honor of the occasion, TransFaith Online has launched new InterSections on Suicide and Depression. Please spread the word!

http://www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/suicide/

http://www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/depression/

The Transgender community faces incredible stigma and isolation. Transgender people, when faced with depression, are too often unsure where to turn for support. Fearing judgement from family, from friends, and from mental health providers, transgender people may not get the help that we need to manage depression. And untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide.

Suicide is yet another area where research and statistics are scarce. Studies generally report a pre-transition suicide attempt rate of 20% or more, with MTFs relatively more likely to attempt suicide than FTMs. But some studies indicate that the rate of attempted suicide for transgender youth is higher than 50%.

Please help us break the silence about depression and suicide. Don't be afraid to ask the question, "Are you thinking about suicide?" Educate yourself about suicide prevention and how you can help: http://www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/suicide/helping_a_friend/

Suicide is not a solution. Don't be afraid to ask for help, if you need it. Don't try to journey through depression and/or suicidal thoughts alone. Help is available: http://www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/suicide/getting_help/

With isolation and stigma such important factors in the disproportionate suicide rate among the transgender community, we hope to further expand this new area of the website to include stories from suicide survivors, who can speak about what it means to have survived and found supportive community. If you would be willing to let your story be told through TransFaith, please contact Chris Paige (215-840-2858 or chris (at) transfaithonline (dot) org).

Thank you,

Chris

************************
TRANSFAITH ON-LINE (http://www.transfaithonline.org/) is dedicated to supporting transgender folks in our faith journeys, while providing useful resources to help people of faith become better educated trans-allies.

TransFaith launches InterSections with information on transgender HIV and AIDS

TransFaith Online is pleased to announce the addition of a new Intersections section of our website...

TransFaith Online is pleased to announce the addition of a new Intersections section of our website (http://www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/), featuring information and resources relating to transgender health and wholeness.

We believe that nurturing the spiritual health of any community necessarily involves paying attention to issues of body, mind, and spirit. Due to the overwhelming risk-factors faced by the transgender community, health and wholeness is truly a matter of life and death.

In our first installation of TransFaith Intersections, we are highlighting concerns about the rate of HIV and AIDS infection in the transgender community:

www.transfaithonline.org/intersections/hiv_and_aids/

We welcome the July/August 2008 issue of "Positively Aware" (http://positivelyaware.com/2008/08_04/index.html) which focused on the transgender community's status as "Invisible and At-Risk." However, in researching this topic, we were dismayed at how few other resources exist on-line addressing issues of HIV and AIDS among the transgender community.

While comprehensive data on the transgender community is not available, local assessments indicate that the transgender community has been one of the communities hit hardest by the AIDS epidemic. There is a desperate need for more resources addressing the unique barriers faced by the transgender community in terms of sensitive prevention and health care resources.

TransFaith Online calls on the transgender people of faith and our allies to:

become better educated about transgender HIV and AIDS

make sure that your HIV and AIDS ministries are sensitive to the unique needs of transgender people

include HIV and AIDS awareness as a part of your transgender advocacy efforts

speak out about the way HIV and AIDS is impacting the transgender community

We are also eager for your assistance in further developing our TransFaith HIV and AIDS InterSection. Please contact Chris Paige (215-840-2858 or chris@transfaithonline.org) with your input, suggestions, and feedback.

For Such a Time As This
A Gathering of Transgender Religious Community

Gathering on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, in New Orleans, LA, For Such a Time as This presents an opportunity for personal networking, community collaboration, and movement building. In these historic times, transgender people and our concerns are becoming more and more visible in both secular and religious communities. Yet, too often, we remain an isolated "minority within a minority."

For Such a Time as This will gather transgender people of faith, our loved ones and allies for discussions about practical topics relating to life in religious communities, including:

Strategies for transgender education

Dynamics of ministry with the transgender community

Blessings and challenges of becoming more visible

Opportunities for collaboration across denominational lines

Our need for authentic relationships of support and accountability between transgender people and our allies

TransFaith Online (www.transfaithonline.org), in collaboration with Many Stories, One Voice (www.manystoriesonevoice.org) and its partners, invites you to this day of conversation. While we will place a high priority on hearing from transgender-identified people, this event is also appropriate for our significant others and family members; allies who are working with or want to work with the transgender community; and anyone who is simply interested in learning more about transgender people and our concerns.

Participants are invited to continue the conversations begun at For Such a Time as This, joining in the Many Stories, One Voice conference, September 4-7, 2008. While the Many Stories, One Voice context is rooted in Christian tradition, transgender persons and allies of other faith perspectives are most welcome to join us at For Such a Time as This.

You will be able to register for For Such a Time as This through Many Stories, One Voice (www.manystoriesonevoice.org) or directly through TransFaith Online (www.transfaithonline.org).
